The Easiest Compost System
Step 1: Choose a Tumbler.
A compost tumbler is a raised barrel you rotate a few times a week. It’s pest-proof, tidy, and easy to manage. I like Black & Decker dual chamber 40 Gallon Tumbler.
Step 2: Learn the Simple Formula
You only need two categories: Greens & Browns.
Greens (wet, nitrogen-rich)
- Fruit/vegetable scraps
- Coffee grounds
- Fresh grass
- Tea leaves
- Flowers
Browns (dry, carbon-rich)
- Leaves
- Straw
- Shredded paper/cardboard
- Wood chips
- Dry grasses
2 parts Brown : 1 part Green
This prevents smells, keeps pests away, and helps things break down beautifully.
Step 3: Build Your Compost in Layers
- Add a layer of browns
- Add your kitchen scraps
- Cover with more browns
- Tumble
Every time you add food scraps, cover them with something dry.
Step 4: Keep It Moist
- If it looks too dry, add a splash of water.
- If it looks wet, add more browns.
- No need to overthink.
Step 5: Let Time Do the Work
Composting rewards patience.
- A tumbler works in 6–10 weeks
You’ll know it’s done when it looks like rich, dark soil
Crumbly, earthy, and sweet-smelling.
Use it to enrich your garden beds, feed fruit trees, nourish flowers, and regenerate tired soil.
Trust Yourself
You’ve already managed a home, a life, a career, a family. You can absolutely manage a compost pile.
